ImageJ: What is the purpose of transforming horizontally?

I'm just starting to work through some of my clam and cockle images via imagej following steps detailed in a @kubu4 lab notebook post. Step 3 says to flip the image horizontally. Is there a purpose to this or is it a fine step to skip?

The notebook post provides the answer:

Clams were photographed from below in their respective plates.

So, in this instance, the image needed to be reversed horizontally, so that the well layout was in the correct orientation.
